Ups and Downs Cheque Presentation

Ups and Downs cheque presentationLocal charity, Ups and Downs Southwest, was presented with a cheque for nearly £250 by the Westonzoyland Carnival Club.
The Westonzoyland-based charity was set up by Wendy O’Carroll 17 years ago, when her son, Oliver, was born with Down’s syndrome. The charity has supported around 500 families who have a child with Down’s syndrome across the Southwest. Wendy says: “about 50 babies will be born with Down’s syndrome in the Southwest this year. We want to make sure we are there for them with the right support and information at the right time. We help families and children right from birth all way up to college, for example running play groups, family days and youth clubs. We also provide a Schools Advisory Service supporting schools with information about how to get the most from their pupil who has Down’s syndrome.”

Club hosts flood evacuees

Westonzoyland Carnival Club shed received a stay of demolition this week as it host 6 evacuees from the floods on the Somerset levels.

The shed had been cleared ready to be demolished for the new build later in the year, but after club members were flooded out of their farm a new home was needed for their livestock.

A day of hard work by several club members and the last of the debris from the shed was cleared, fences erected and gates hung ready for the new arrivals.

Later that evening as the rain came down 4 tractors with animals, feed, and bedding arrived. Once the water troughs were filled and the evacuated calves fed, they were shut up for the night.

Buy a Brick Campaign

E-mail Print PDF

With the current shed now 27 years old it’s condition has gradually become worse in recent years and the regular maintenance has been unable to keep the shed in a good enough condition. The dutch barn roof has rusted through and ‘leaks like a sieve’, the large doors are rusting out, electrics are outdated and the one side of the shed that has never been concreted floods in heavy rain. We have also been running out of room for the last ten years as the carts being built have become larger and more complex.

Earlier this year we took the major decision that with the club in a good position financially and with a strong membership it was time to tackle a project like replacing the old carnival shed and to build a larger modern facility.

In order to realistically fund a project such as this we also decided to sacrifice the standard of cart to be built in 2013, a minimal amount of funds will be spent on updating last year’s entry and the remaining annual income will be put aside

We would really appreciate it if you could join us in this ‘ONE OFF’ venture and purchase an engraved brick with a personal inscription of your choice. All bricks sold will be put together to make a large thank you wall which will stand within the new shed for decades to come. The special wall will be unveiled when the new shed is officially opened in the summer of 2014.

 Buy a Brick
We are all hoping that this special campaign will be one of the major fundraisers required to help complete the largest project the club have undertaken since the original shed was erected 27 years ago. Funds for the shed are being put aside regularly whilst keeping the normal club account manageable. Alongside extra fundraisers during the summer months this campaign was launched in early July.

We have approached Life Members, Vice Members, local companies, local organisations, friends of the club and members old and new.

If you would like to support us and forever own a part of Westonzoyland Carnival Club history then please fill in the order form and send a minimum donation of £35.00 to:

Tim Martin.
